As soon as I walked out of the theater on the second night of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I was a goner. Peter Jackson had made a set of books that had bored me to tears a magnificent piece of visual storytelling. Who wouldn't want to write in such a world as he shaped? These seven are my favorites; the rest are listed below.
Warning: Most of the works herein involve, to some degree, homosexual and homoerotic situations. I could never really get beyond coy dialogue and over-worded bedroom scenes, but don't say I didn't warn you.
  • The Big One - It's Mr. Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday, and Meriadoc Brandybuck has one thing on his mind: finding out what's underneath the tarp covering Gandalf's cart. Unfortunately for him, Hamfast Gamgee also has a single-minded determination to keep the celebration running smoothly for the duration. Between creative hearing, overactive imaginations and more than one pair of mischievous halflings, who will be smiling at the end of the night? [PG] more gen than not
  • A Midnight Excursion - The walls of Rivendell are entirely too thin; all the noise is keeping Peregrin Took awake. Surely Merry can keep him distracted. Poncy elves and strange sweet nothings, sleepwalking Steward-heirs and dwarf tossing -- will Merry and Pippin ever be able to sleep? [PG-13] blatant giggly slash
  • A Modest Proposal - Who says Gimli wants to jump that pointy-eared elf? [PG] wants to be slash
  • Aurora - It's the shortest night of the year, and Bilbo Baggins is away. Within and without, skyward and down below, Frodo and Sam discover strange and beautiful things. [PG] slash

The last three were all written in response to Dale's One Ring Challenge. What would happen if the Quest were to fail, and rather than the Ring being destroyed, it was claimed?

  • Gabilgimli - A world ruled by dwaves is a cold and gleaming thing. [PG] gen/AU
  • Treacherous As The Dawn - With this Ring, I thee wed. [G] gen/AU
  • Ernil i Pheriannath - The fireworks have gotten better since Merry and Pippin returned from their trip Away. [R] slash, of a sort

  • Watching (Frodo/Sam, Merry/Pippin) - The two couples observe their other halves. [G] poetry
  • Flavored (Merry/Pippin) - Merry, Pippin, Mr. Sketch Markers and the games you can play with each. My very first piece of Rings fiction. [a mild R]
  • Solace (Merry/Pippin) - There are some mistakes you cannot fix, although the touch of a soothing hand oftentimes can heal them. [PG-13]
  • The Great River - Merry longs for his Brandywine. Loosest of sequels to "Solace." [G]
  • Casting Off the Scarf (Merry/Pippin, Frodo/Sam) - Peregrin Took comes of age, and he knows exactly what he wants for his thirty-third. [NC-17]
  • Other Havens - The burden is not always lightest on those left behind. [PG]
  • An Equitable Plan (OC/OC, Frodo/Sam) - The Hobbiton gossips know everything from Michel Delving to Bree. Myrtle Goodbody has a plan to put their tongues to rest, and Frodo Baggins is just the one to help her. [G]
  • Mothers - A mother's grief is unending, as is her hope. [G] gen

Originally I was going to write this six-part arc in which all four hobbits discover their love for each other etc etc etc, but I only got through Frodo and Sam's bit, since I wrote so much Merry/Pippin anyway. I've got notes for the other three, and the unfinished bits might make it up here at some point. In any event, here is the first half of The Book of Hours.

  • And Like the Horizon (Frodo/Sam) - In a garden bloom many things, but some flowers only come out at sunset. [PG]
  • A Very Special Birthday Party (Frodo/Sam) - Frodo wants only one thing for his birthday this year -- and he's not doing a particularly good job of concealing what it is. [PG-13]
  • The Warming Lesson (Frodo/Sam) - A little weather ain't never kept a Gamgee from his job, nor from his true love either. [PG-13]
