Like the mighty Vikings of yore, take to your longboat of doom -- or your browser, whichever suits you best, really -- and pillage, plunder, and conquer! (Casual surfing also acceptable, though an impressive helm or at least a hefty fur mantle is a must.)

Comedy/Parody

  • It's hard to be Colin Firth. - Whoever thought buying a cup of coffee could have such disastrous consequences?
  • Lord of the Peeps - Tolkien's majestic saga, recreated with all its power and glory in sugary Easter confection format.
  • The Bushiad - Who says Homer is irrelevant? See the horrible tragicomedy of the current administration played out as if it was a majestic saga.
  • 1000 Blank White Cards - The bestest card game on the face of the planet. No, seriously -- go look, and then get thee hence and play!
  • Yatta! - If you've seen it, you know there are no words. If you haven't, prepare to be astounded. A complete visual history.
  • Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King in glorious (or is it glonous?) Engrish.
  • Lileks.com - This just has spiffy, retro-neat things on it. You'll be amazed at the stuff you turn up.
  • A Heap of Trouble - Nine naked men just walking down the road would cause a heap of trouble for all concerned...

  • A Softer World - A two-person creative team, one responsible for coming up with a fairly unassuming photograph, the other for writing a twisted caption. Somewhat uneven, but good for a smile. Some people even take it further.
  • Making Fiends - I honestly don't think of myself as all that weird, but then my tastes go and betray me.
  • Nice Hair - Neil Gaiman, Danny Elfman and Tim Burton sharing a flat. Surely not a template for strange happenings... Occasional guest appearances by a gay pirate living under Tim's bed.
  • Plastic Gandalf - The many adventures of a frisky, silly and spirited group of Lord of the Rings action figures.
  • CTR-ALT-DEL - I'm not even a gamer and I find this strip hilarious and strangely addictive.

    Human Interest/Politics

  • Learning to Love You More - Weekly exercises in trying to see the beauty in the world. Yes, I like that sort of stuff. So sue me, I'm a sentimentalist.
  • PostSecret - An interesting project in which anonymous writers send in self-illustrated secrets, some of which are amusing, many of which are sort of sad and horrifying. I'm interested in that sort of thing too.
  • Found Magazine - There's no better proof for the strangeness of people than found objects. This publication collects and publishes them, for the wonderment and bemusement of all.
  • The Mirror Project - Self-portraits in reflective surfaces. Simple, right? Also highly neat.
  • The New Republic - These guys are my heroes, keeping alive the tradition of intellectual examinations of politics, art and anything else that strikes them as significant. Unfortunately, you need a paid subscription to access the juciest stuff, but still -- you should be reading anyway.
  • Maxomai - The Greek verb for combat. This guy keeps tabs on the world, and spares no pity for any spin the media (or the White House) puts out.

  • Wikipedia - A thorough, sprawling and above all free online encyclopedia. Don't leave home without it.

    Things Hellenic

  • Greek Mythology - A comprehensive survey -- surprise, surprise! -- of Greek mythology. Good for checking Classical references and for realizing just how intertwined and incestuous that whole canon is.

  • Response-o-Matic - This nifty page will create a survey for you, complete with tickyboxes, radio buttons, pulldown menus and freewriting spaces.
  • Ex-posed.com - It's people like this that make me feel totally inadequate when it comes to web design. She's got gobs of free brushes, textures and all sorts of other nifty Photoshop stuff. This is where I got the frame for the image next to this table, incidentally.
